Christmas Bird Count
Overview
Join us Saturday, December 14th 2024 for the 125th Christmas Bird Count
Since Christmas Day 1900, birders around the country have been brought together to help the Audubon Society in their annual Christmas Bird Count. Walking Mountains helps to organize the Christmas Bird Count in two circular-shaped areas located around Eagle and Dotsero Colorado. The Christmas Bird Count relies on volunteers to survey these areas and to tally every bird that they see.
On Saturday, December 14th, 2024, we will meet in Eagle, CO at Brush Creek Elementary School to break into small groups to go out and survey specific places. Most of the surveys are done by vehicle but other methods of travel are encouraged too. We will survey from about 11 am to 4 pm. Then we will come together again to turn in data sheets, discuss the birds we’ve seen, and share some food and beverages.
Please be prepared for any adverse weather you may encounter and bring lots of layers and warm, waterproof boots. We recommend a backpack for your binoculars, field guides, extra mittens, thermos, etc. Please also pack water and a sack lunch. We will provide some snacks before at Brush Creek Elementary School.
Registrants will get detailed information through email.
Although the event will run in most weather conditions, if it is actively snowing birds won’t be active enough to count. The “rain delay” back-up date is set for Sunday, December 15th.
